Julie Thomas was selected as the Democratic nominee for the District 2 seat on the Monroe County Board of Commissioners Tuesday. No Republicans filed declarations of candidacy for the open seat.
Thomas received 51.53% of the vote in the Democratic primary Tuesday. Her opponent, Peter Iversen, received 48.47% of the vote.
Thomas is an incumbent candidate, having served on the Board of Commissioners since 2013. She currently sits as the board’s president. She served on the Monroe County council for four years before joining the Board of Commissioners. Thomas told the Indiana Daily Student in March she is running for re-election because she wants to continue working on projects she started while in office, including constructing a new county jail.
Iversen has served on the Monroe County Council since 2019. He is the council’s Personnel Administration Committee chair, and a member of the council Justice Fiscal Advisory Committee — a committee responsible for making budget recommendations about community justice in Monroe County. Iversen’s priorities include increasing housing availability, ensuring diversity, equity and inclusion are embedded in government decisions, supporting competitive wages and combating the climate crisis, according to his campaign website.
The Monroe County Board of Commissioners' responsibilities include auditing and authorizing claims against the county, maintaining county properties, supervising the maintenance of county roads and bridges and implementing solid waste management strategies. Commissioners can also appoint members to fill positions of various county boards, committees and commissions.
The District 2 seat represents Bloomington Township, which includes part of the city of Bloomington.
